Rising Prevalence of MASLD: Implications for Metabolic Health

Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) has become a significant concern in metabolic health, with its prevalence rising dramatically over the past decade. The recent study utilizing data from the UK Clinical Practice Research Datalink (CPRD) sheds light on the epidemiology and trends of MASLD diagnoses from 2003 to 2022. The study found that the recorded prevalence of MASLD increased from 0.52% in 2012 to 2.42% in 2022, representing a five-fold rise (p<0.001). Similarly, the incidence rate doubled from 1.60 to 3.31 per 1000 person-years during the same period (p<0.001). Notably, individuals diagnosed with MASLD also had a significantly higher prevalence of type 2 diabetes (21.0% vs 7.7% in controls) and hypertension (35.3% vs 18.7% in controls). The study also highlighted a concerning disparity in the availability of Fibrosis-4 (Fib-4) components for risk stratification, particularly among South Asian individuals, who were underrepresented in this aspect despite being overrepresented in the MASLD cohort.
